Opening Night by Lucien Lelong c1935

Opening Night by Lucien Lelong: launched in 1935.

This is the fragrance 'Orage'. Re-branded for the English market; branded in France as 'La Première'.



Fragrance Composition:


So what does it smell like? It was a sparkling aldehydic floral oriental fragrance for women with a chypre base.
  • Top notes: aldehydes, Sicilian mandarin, Calabrian bergamot, nutmeg
  • Middle notes: rose, ylang ylang, Parma violet, sage, freesia, Florentine iris, Grasse jasmine, hydrangea, clove
  • Base notes: benzoin, orris, Tonkin musk, Atlas cedar, Haitian vetiver, Indonesian patchouli, Mysore sandalwood, Yugoslavian oakmoss, ambergris, Mexican vanilla


Bottles:


The perfume was housed in clear glass step pyramid bottles designed by Philippe Hiolle, available in six sizes:
  • 2.24" - 5,7 cm tall
  • 2.87" - 7,3 cm tall
  • 3.22" - 8,2 cm tall
  • 3.74' - 9,5 cm tall
  • 4.5" - 11,5 cm tall
  • 6.18" - 15,7 cm tall


Another bottle used for Opening Night is circular, footed, with a matching basin stopper. the surfaces are cut with a criss/cross pattern.



Opening Night was also housed in less expensive bottles over the years.


Fate of the Fragrance:


Discontinued in 1970.

Last remaining stock was being sold in 1971 with drastically reduced prices, 2 oz Parfum originally retailed for $30 was sold for just $5.
